EDUCATION
Research is constantly showing better, more effective, and safer ways to help swimmers complete at the highest levels. ISCA is leading the way for coaches to use this research to become better coaches. The ISCA education program not only builds on each coach’s current level of education and experience, but also complements programs offered by USA Swimming, ASCA, FINA, and other national coaches organizations. Our education program is designed for career development, giving coaches essential tools and knowledge to be more effective. Carefully curated courses have been reviewed by both coaches and scientists for accuracy and applicability.
There are three core disciplines in the ISCA coach certification program: Biomechanics, Physiology, and Sports Psychology. To become an ISCA Certified Coach, you will build your education in these disciplines and learn how to apply scientific principles and research to your daily coaching strategy.
Biomechanics – learn the biomechanical basis of technique for swimming, along with cues and strategies for teaching optimal technique and correcting technique elements
Physiology – learn how the human body systems function, with a specific focus on swimmers and how to customize training
Sports Psychology – learn to prepare swimmers for success with mental preparation and training skills, and the role psychology plays in coaching and your function as a leader.
Each core discipline is taught by an expert in their respective field. Rod Havriluk Ph.D. (Biomechanics), and has over 35 years of experience conducting research on swimming technique. Dr. Joel Stager (Physiology), Director of the Counsilman Center for the Science of Swimming, taught at IU for more than 30 years and has coached throughout his career. John Heil (Psychology), D.A., Licensed Clinical Psychologist, is both a clinical psychologist and sport psychologist, experienced in working with coaches and swimmers.
